Update from Wild Thyme, October 1st


“Pinch punch, first of the month!”


We welcomed our first diners in 6 months this past weekend, running two dinners as a pre-cursor to our scheduled Supper Clubs that are due to commence on Saturday, 10th October.  It was so good to be serving again, everyone had a great evening and devoured Nick’s chosen menu of meze, slow roast Greek lamb and custard tarts with apricots.


The restaurant is looking sparkly with a fresh coat of paint, floor sanded and varnished, new soft backed comfy velvet chairs in lovely, jewelled colours, and our large new European oak table blending well with the older ones.  All we need now is you!  We appreciate that the latest news may be making some of you cautious about dining out, but we want to re-assure you that tables are well- spaced and we are now fully “COVID friendly”.


Bookings for our Dining Clubs have been slower than we hoped, and we need to reach a minimum level of customers to make these viable and go ahead. There may be a mixture of reasons why you haven’t booked, and we’d welcome some feedback if you feel we haven’t got the offering quite right or if you’d like to share your thoughts.


Otherwise, if you’ve been thinking about booking then now’s the time!  Following our gigs over the weekend, we are happy to say that we can accommodate a couple of tables for two or three guests on each event, with the rest for groups of four to six.  We also want you to know that if you have to cancel due to a local lockdown, self-isolation or illness then you can use the deposit monies against a Take me Home dinner, so you won’t be out of pocket.


Finally, we understand that some of you may just not be going out right now and our Take me Home dinners are a great way to treat yourself or others during the coming winter months.  We are thinking about extending these, delivering a little further afield and introducing other days – all of which is possible if the demand is there, so again do let us know what you’d welcome.

We may not be open as a ten table restaurant but we are open for:


• Wedding receptions for parties up to 15 guests.

• Household and support bubble for a private dinner.

• Take me Home Friday Dinner Service

• Meeting and lunch venue for your business event – more info to follow next time.

• Private Chef service where Nick will come to you and cook!

• Dining Clubs


Of course the health and safety of our staff and customers is paramount and we will ensure this by our full COVID-19 assessment that’s been carried out and will continue to be monitored.


• Staff will be wearing masks.

• Table service only.

• We will adjust our dinner timings to fit the new rules – dinner will start at 7.30 pm with dinners invited to arrive at set times from 7pm and we will ensure you are ready to leave the premises by 10pm.

• Tables of up to 6 guests only.

• Test and Trace will be in operation.

Helping the local community with Mary's Meals – Update!


So since the restaurant closed on the 22 March we have cooked in the region of 10,000 meals in the past 20 weeks and this is how we did it…


Every Monday we had a delivery of fresh vegetables, meat, pasta and rice all either bought with donations or donated directly through St Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton. It was quite a task to peel and chop all those veggies in one afternoon.


Tuesday was the big cook up day where Nick turned this produce into four or five different dishes, we aimed to cook around 500 meals a week.   Meals have included chicken curry, pasta bolognese, chunky beef and sweet potato chill and sausage casserole.


Wednesday mornings was spent packaging and labelling meals before delivering into the seven freezers occupying the old Nat West building.


It’s been our absolute pleasure to have been able to help provide these meals to you and families in our community during lockdown and we hope you’ve enjoyed them!


It’s been great to work together with Mary’s Meals at The Branch and we are making plans of how we can continue to work together to bring more tasty, healthy food to the community - hopefully offering you an opportunity to cook!


For the last week of providing these meals we sent out a recipe card with all the ingredients to have a go at making Nick’s legendary Sausage Casserole.

Mary's Meals


Mary's meals is run by our local church – St Mary’s, and provides frozen meals and other food to those within our community that need it most.  During these past few weeks, this operation has grown from around 40 meals per month to about 150 a week and so we are now cooking a couple of days a week to keep their five freezers stocked.


The Chippy Larder


The Chippy larder is a weekly food event based in Chipping Norton for members of the charity SOFEA.  Food is obtained from SOFEA in partnership with FareShare who rescue (from suppliers/supermarkets) and re-distribute hundreds of tonnes of food surplus each year throughout the Thames Valley region, supporting families in need whilst reducing food waste.


Again, demand for this service is growing fast and the team of volunteers, (of which Sally is one) are currently delivering around 300 boxes locally every Friday.   There is also a collection hub based at the Leisure Centre in Chipping Norton every Friday afternoon.
